Running - 2

Rich

Well, I've done it!  On Saturday I ran my first 5K parkrun and in the process raised nearly £700 for the heart failure charity, Pumping Marvellous.  I'm not going to lie and say it was the easiest thing I've ever done because I've been hobbling around ever since with sore and stiff legs and a painful knee but hopefully this is the beginning of something new that will get easier as time goes on.

When I started doing this I set myself a target time for my first run of between 40 and 45mins and managed to complete the 5K on Saturday in 42min 29sec so slap bang in the middle of my target.  Now the plan is to try and get it down to 40mins initially and 30mins eventually.  Not sure how long this will take but I think it's good to have targets to work towards.

The hardest part for me is probably hills.  I bloody hate hills (and Iron Maiden). While the Roundhay park run is mainly downhill or flat it does mean you have to get back to the highest point as you go round.  The finish line is actually at the top of the hill which means the end of the run is a bit of a nightmare so I'm hoping this gets easier too as things progress.

I've been amazed at the amount of money I have raised doing this.  I was dubious as to whether I'd get anywhere near my initial target of £250 so to be near £700 has been amazing and is testament to what amazing people I have as family and friends (as well as some people who have donated who don't know me from Adam).  I thank you all and it means so much.  I know the money will be put to good use by Pumping Marvellous.  Of course, if you woud still like to make a donation, you can get yourself over to https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Richard-Cleverley1 .
